I met John P. Callos at a function in my hometown Long Beach, CA and we started talking about ...well many things that we think important and he invited me to read his book LUCK IS NOT A STRATEGY. WOW, was - NOo am really thinking about and questioning politics and poverty here in the USA. We both have attended close universities (including USC), US Armed Forces during "conflicts", love the water and have high patriotic stamina.After reading Book 1 about his exploits and his son following his fathers passion for defense of our American Way, Book 2 begins (in this same folder) and as I see it presents NAFTA (USA/MEXICO) situations with facts, logic, and reasoned solutions.
6 months later:
Several of the presidential candidates are extolling many of the ideas that were given in Book 2...a testament that John knew what he was talking about; having an enforceable USA/Mexico border and immigration program. I like Donald Trump's approach, even a little more protection and emphatic than the authors. You have to read this book to better understand how important legal immigration is to our country!
I was required to read Ann Rand ATLAS SHRUGGED, by my parents, I then read FOUNTAINHEAD. This book is A MUST read also!

Luck is Not a Strategy is aptly titled. A friend gave me a copy of this book, and I set it on a shelf for a few days before I started reading. Once I got started, I couldn't put it down! The world in which we live is truly interconnected in every way, and this book highlights how we must as individuals and a nation maintain a purposeful long-term strategy. We can no longer pretend that we are isolated individuals, because everything we do really does have a global impact.
This book brings to light the challenges we face as a nation, and I enjoyed the subtle humour.
Obviouly well researched, but more importantly a good read! Many interesting, somewhat little known revelations on how U.S. Intelligence makes things happen in the competitive world of intelligence. Some real surprises!
Essentially, it seems that Mr. Callos has written two books and even named them as such. Book One takes us back in time to events that we watched unfold and confirms our belief that much goes on "behind the scenes" whenever our country is engaged. Book Two was a look at the future as it could be. What I need now is Book Three to tell me if it were Douglas Winslow who was shot, and, if so, what happens to his vision of the future? As another native Californian with a military background and strong political feelings, it was difficult not to put real names to some of his fictional characters. As a Republican, it had that "feel good" feeling until the "piercing gunshot rang out." Maybe my copy was missing Book Three. If so, please send it as soon as you can as I am holding my breath! waiting!
This book kept me up all night because I wanted to complete it after starting. Great read and although it is in "fiction" I know most of this stuff really happened in the way it was written.
Mr. Callos has a very entertaining way of telling the story of a modern and somewhat idealistic family and times. Wish we had more real men like those in this book. Have told several friends about it and they agree it is an uplifting and worthwhile read. Good job Mr. Callos. Looking forward to your next book!
